Amateur Golf

I was browsing channels on the tv waiting for the US Open Championships to start, when I chanced upon the finals match of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championships at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Upper Course between Michael Thorbjornsen of Wellesley, Massachusetts against Akshay Bhatia from Wake Forest, North Carolina.

It was an exciting match play duel between the two best junior golfer in America with Michael needing the whole 36 holes to edge out a 1up win over Akshay. No one was in complete control of the match until the last hole as the two traded knockout blows that either seems able to counter when finding themselves a hole down. I was particularly impressed with Michael’s swing as it was fundamentally sound and very powerful compared to that of Akshay who is a southpaw.

In the end it was Michael who triumphed in the duel and considering this was his first Junior Championships and two more to go makes you wonder if he can do a Tiger Triple which is a long shot but not impossible. With this win Michael qualified to play for the US Open Championship next year making the young golfer visibly excited at the privilege of being able to play at one of the prestigious majors of professional golf.
